Lecturers: 

The lecture will be organized on a biweekly basis. It will be accompanied by a biweekly seminar, held just after the lecture.

  • 03.11.2008: Basic modeling elements, foundational theory, examples. Differences to other modeling paradigms.
  • 17.11. 2008: OO modeling. Basics, UML. Differences to other modeling paradigms.
  • 01.12. 2008: Ontologies. Definitions, types, modeling elements, RDFS, OWL, ontology reasoning. Differences to other modeling paradigms.
  • 15.12. 2008: Ontologies II. Logics, RDF, RDFS, OWL. NEWS: the lecture is going to be held in room 3W03.
  • 12.01. 2009: Process modeling.  Modeling elements, BPMN, BPEL, UML. Differences to other modeling paradigms. NEWS: the lecture is going to be held in room SR24.

Attendance policy
The lecture and the seminar are closely interrelated. Assignments for the next seminar will be made at the end of each lecture. Assignments require material presented in the lecture in addition to textbooks and extended reading. Assignments will be discussed and evaluated during the seminar. The attendance of the seminar is obligatory. Students are allowed to miss maximally 2 hours of the total number of seminar hours.

Description: 

The lecture and the associated seminar introduce modeling as a discipline within Computer Science and Engineering, and some of the the most important modeling paradigms of the last decades (ER modeling, object orientation, ontologies, service-oriented modeling etc.) It presents core modeling primitives, principles, and best practices, exemplified by real-world examples and case studies.

Students will get an overview on the most important principles of (domain) modeling, learn how to model correctly and usefully, and get familiar with several established modeling paradigms, their commonalities and differences.

Exams: 

The lecture will be concluded with a written examination on January, 26 2009, 14:15-16:00, *3W03*. If needed, dates for a second and third examination will be announced in due time.

The grading of the seminar is based on two criteria: attendance (see above), and assignments. There will be 6 assignments in total, at least 4 should be successfully solved by every student and submitted to the lecturer per email within a two weeks time frame.  In addition every student should give at least two assignment presentations in front of the other students during the seminar. Students who wish to give a presentation should send an email to the lecturer no later than one week after the proposed assignments. The email should specify the assignment(s) to be presented.
